2010 Heathcote Riesling

Current Vintage 2010

The 2010 Heathcote Riesling is the fifth to be released under the Shelmerdine label. The intensity of fruit reflects the extremely warm and dry Summer and Autumn. Cold nights and warm days provide fruit with complex floral and citrus blossom aromatics. Grown in granite soils, the result is a wine of intense minerality, purity and persistent acidity.

The Vineyard

The fruit for this wine was grown at our Merindoc Vineyard, located at Tooborac in the southern cooler part of the Heathcote wine region, Central Victoria. The vineyard is planted on low fertility ironstone and granite soils, surrounded by spectacular granite boulders. The warm and dry growing season resulted in miniscule yields of intensely flavoured grapes.

The Winemaking

After hand-harvesting in early March the fruit was whole-bunch pressed to minimise the extraction of coarse tannins. The juice was then cold settled and racked prior to commencement of fermentation in stainless steel. At the completion of the primary fermentation, the wine was lightly fined, filtered and cold-stabilised. The finished wine was bottled under screwcap in July 2010 in order to preserve freshness and fruit vibrancy.
